Harrisburg Horizon - Community

HARRISBURG HORIZON

"A Commitment to Community"

HORIZON in the Community

by Mike Roteman

We all know that the Harrisburg HORIZON are winners on the court. Five straight Eastern Basketball Alliance Championships and three-peating in 2006 as Women’s EBA Champions with an undefeated season attest to that. But as important as on the court success is to Dick and Cynthia Anzolut, the HORIZON owners, the team’s off the court success in giving something back to Harrisburg and the surrounding community has been equally as important.

“Winning basketball games and championships means a lot to us,” says Cynthia, who doubles as the team’s general manager, “but it is every bit as pleasing to see the delight on the faces of our players and our young people when we conduct programs like youth basketball clinics and we participate with the Special Olympics. We absolutely love being winners there.”

Whether hosting the State Farm Insurance/Enterprise Rent-A-Car Fantasy Camp for Sertoma Clubs Hard of Hearing Boys and Girls, or “Slammin ’n’ Jammin” Against Crime with, PA State Police and local celebrities, the HORIZON pride themselves on the role that they play in making this a better community for all of us.

“We want our players to be exceptional athletes,” says Dick Anzolut, “but even more importantly we want them to be exceptional people and role models.”

That is one of the reasons that HORIZON forward Kevin Rowe is happy to be a part of the HORIZON family. “There is no better feeling to me than being able to make kids smile by doing little things like that. That's another reason I love playing with the HORIZON, because of the events we do with children in the community,” said Kevin.

Lady HORIZON point guard Amy MacDonald agrees. “Kids need to see athletes who support their communities and who value education,” said Amy. “I feel I am a role model as a young, woman athlete and a teacher for my students. I try to show them how important it is to work hard and to be a good teammate.”

Another highly successful community event that has become a HORIZON tradition is the annual U.S. Army Clinic for young hoopsters between 6 and 15 years of age. Again this year young players attended the clinic and got to learn the fine points of the game from the HORIZON and Lady HORIZON players.

The HORIZON also works with various youth basketball programs such as the YMCA, the Paxtonia Basketball Association, the Tri-Communities Basketball Association, and Hard to Guard Athletes, giving youngsters from these groups an opportunity to put on skill demonstrations or play games at halftime or prior to HORIZON contests.

Yes, the HORIZON most certainly are winners, both on and off of the court
