LADY HORIZON FINISH 8-1 AND WIN WEBA TITLE

May 12, 2004, Harrisburg, PA.. The Harrisburg Lady Horizon only lost one game last year, but failed to win the WEBA Title.

This year, despite dropping the season opener to New York, the Lady Horizon won their next eight games. It was enough to win this year's championship.

Leading the way for Harrisburg were guards Hilary Waltman and Amy MacDonald, who led the team in scoring throughout the season. Walman's best performance came against Schuylkill late in the season when she scored 25 points and helped Harrisburg to a 96-71 win. MacDonald was hot early in the season, when she also scored 25 points against Schuylkill en route to an 80-76 win.

Forward Sasha Leverentz got hot towards the end of the season to help Harrisburg win down the stretch. Leverentz finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds against Philadelphia and scored 27 points against Schuylkill.

Harrisburg relied on their fast break throughout the season. Once Harrisburg grabbed a defensive rebound, Amy MacDonald or guard Safiyyah Bashir would get the ball and heave it down court, often to Waltman. This would allow Harrisburg to jump out to early leads, which Coach Al Clocker would maintain by constantly substituting players in and out to keep them fresh.

The Lady Horizon were able to overcome the absence of center Carla Vicidomini, who suffered a season-ending leg injury halfway through the year. Sue Rosso, Christina Vouriotis, Ashley Hoffman, Kate Ulrich and Tanya Brown all stepped up in various games to fill the void left by Vicidomini. April Longo was perhaps the most exciting player for the Horizon, often driving to the basket and beating multiple defenders for a score.

LADY HORIZON FINISHES WITH 8 STRAIGHT WINS

May 8, 2004, Harrisburg, PA...It wasn't much of a game. Simply a metaphor of their season. The Harrisburg Lady Horizon beat the overmatched Philadelphia Lady Power 86-68 Saturday with an all-out effort. They finished with an 8-1 record for the year.

The Lady Horizon maintained a comfortable lead throughout the game despite a Herculean effort from Philadelphia guard Iesha Smith, who led all scorers with 34 points and was the Power's lone threat on offense. Smith made four three-pointers and was perfect 8-8 from the foul line.

Harrisburg started to pull away early in the contest thanks to their fast break. They opened up an 11-point lead after an Amy MacDonald field goal with 9:39 remaining in the first half. Philadelphia never got to within single digits from that point on, though they did cut it to 12 halfway through the second half.

Guard Hilary Waltman scored a team-high 23 points and forward Sasah Leverentz had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Guard April Longo finished with 15 points and two three-pointers. Harrisburg went 12-16 from the foul line.

The win was a fitting end to Harrisburg's season, which saw them win 8 consecutive games after losing to New York in the season opener. The Lady Horizon often out-ran opponents by pushing the ball up the court and scoring easy points in transition. The Horizon's depth was always to their advantage as the bench was able to keep the momentum going after the starters gained the lead. This was the case even without starting center Carla Vicidomini, who suffered a season-ending knee injury halfway through the season.
